he campaign aims at achieving the following broad objectives: • Sensitizing the youth and the rest of the civil society of Delhi about the seriousness of the issue of Delhi’s depleting green cover. • Mobilizing huge number of young people to participate in conserving and rejuvenating Delhi’s green cover and hence building their capacity to bring about positive change. • Building a huge network of young volunteers who are ready to come forward and participate in similar environmental campaigns as and when the need arises. • Attracting the State’s attention towards the efforts of young people and pressurizing it to take necessary steps to create a greener Delhi.

Context

The booming growth of malls, soaring flyovers, speeding automobiles, Delhi Metro and the 2010 Games have left Delhi gasping for breath. The facts are really disturbing:

• There is just 1 tree for every 350 people in Delhi.

• The state’s forest and tree cover is just a miniscule 10.2% against the required 33%

• More than 35000 trees have been cut in the last few years to make way for new construction.

• South Delhi, which earlier was known for its greenery has gone through massive tree felling drives. Sunder Nursery which is home to 114 different species of trees will soon be demolished for Delhi’s first tunnel road.

As a response to such environmentally destructive activities and as an attempt to save the city’s green cover, Monsoon Wooding is a campaign that we run annually during the Monsoon season (July – September).

Here is what we do-

• Plantation- Plant tress ‘wherever' possible

• Distribution- Gift trees to ‘everyone' possible

• Awareness- Spreading awareness on the importance of trees and its interconnectedness with various elements of life,

• Engagement- Positively engage ‘as many’ as possible.

Activities

The campaign was launched in August 2005. More than 600 young volunteers participated in the campaign in 2005, 2006 and 2007, staging street plays, distributing and planting saplings across Delhi. The drive has received a lot of support and co-operation from the Forest Department of Delhi Government’s Ministry of Environment and Forest. The department provides us with native tree species of Delhi such as Paapri, Pilkhan, Kaner, Mulethia and Jamun. We have conducted plantation drives in collaboration with CEMDE (Center for Environmental Management of Degraded Ecosystems) at the Yamuna Bio Diversity Park along with students from Salwan Public School (Rajendra Nagar), New Delhi.

We have also conducted tree plantation drives inside the premises of Salwan Public School, (Mayur Vihar) & the American Embassy School. We conducted a tree plantation drive at a slum community in RK Puram along with students of Green Fields School (Safdarjung Enclave) and volunteers from Delhi University.

We plan to make Monsoon Wooding 2009 bigger than the previous years in terms of impact, outreach and participation. University as well as school students will be engaged in plantation/distribution drives across Delhi.
