Mahatma Gandhi once said, “The soul of India lives in its villages”. Why is the soul so neglected today? Or 60 per cent of the country’s population lives in villages and after almost 60 years of independence, rural India remains neglected and yet to become self sufficient. GRAM ANUBHAV exposes young minds to the realities of rural India and to bring them out of their atomized existence to realize and experience village life. It helps foster an understanding about both India and ‘BHARAT’ and how each is incomplete without the other. The intervention focuses on self realization and discovery vis-à-vis social responsibility and awareness. For each village exposure trip, we collaborate with a local organization that has grass root level presence the region. So far, we have collaborated with Society for Integrated Development of the Himalayas (SIDH) in Mussoorie, Bodh Shiksha Samiti in Alwar and Foundation for Ecological Security in Udaipur.

Context

A village has a unique social, economic, cultural, political, and physical landscape which separates it from an urban area.

Unfortunately, a complete lack of political will in the past sixty years has brought us to a point where cities continue to grow in terms of economy and size, while the villages suffer and deteriorate.

Activities

• Village Study
We facilitate an intensive study of the village where the students are sent to different families for a personal interaction and to learn and observe the way the villagers live.

• Shramdaan
Shramdaan which basically means voluntary labour or donation of labour is to help the village community through collective effort and to contribute in making their lives better. This can involve either assisting the farmers in their fields in harvesting, sowing and weeding of wild grass or assisting them in small scale construction work.

• Leadership Training
We believe that leadership is important in comprehending the functioning of governance and democracy in India. The youth are the building blocks of an emerging India and the future changemakers. The situation of the villages in the country can change only if the youth play an active role.

• Cultural Performance
Music is an essential part of village life and represents the history, culture and tradition of a particular village. During Gram Anubhav, we organize a cultural evening where local artists perform, giving us a glimpse of their folk art.
