The immediacy of environmental damage and the need for urgent positive action had never been more palpably felt than now. With ecological balances being disturbed rampantly, it becomes imperative that the country sees simultaneous and spontaneous initiatives, organizations, groups and struggles on the environment breaking out all across. There is tremendous virtue in bringing all such initiatives together under one larger umbrella, consolidating the ideas and strengths of initiatives large and small on the environment.

Context

In uniting the voices, protests and energies of environmental activists and organizations rather than each remaining an isolated action. The greatest virtue in a consensual platform for all environmental actions remains the fact that it makes each initiative more efficient, and thus makes its impact on the ecology more visible and long-term.

Objectives

Objectives

• Provide one collective and consolidated space to Projects, NGOs, Groups, Individuals, and Communities that work on the environment.
• Establishing a Solution Stop for capacity development and networking for all environmental initiatives across the county along with virtual as well as physical platform for all such initiatives to liaison/partner productively with each other
• Advocacy through establishing a single representative face of environmental activism in India and an interface with the world.
• Ensuring Increase in the collective outreach and efficacy of approaches and solutions.
NEON thus will function at the Virtual Level- as a Website and Database of the members
And at a Physical Level- as a Resource Center, Archive and Coordination Center.

Approach and Strategy

NEON works at Cross learning, Mobilization, Advocacy and Capacity Building through establishment of linkages at various levels:
• Organization-- Organization
• Organization--Communities
• Organization—Experts/Resources
• NEON- Outside (Media, Government Establishments, other Networks etc.)

The NEON space connects people/organizations of common interest on issues of mutual relevance. These issues or events are then spread wider, where organizations offer suggestions, consultations both individually as well as collectively. After thrashing out each others ideas, or the ideas of the community as a whole members Collaborate for subsequent Action to Pressurise towards corrective measures.

NEON Theme Groups

Member organizations and Individuals would be divided into separate Theme Groups to facilitate operational flexibility as well as optimal efficacy in archiving and accessing required information for each such member. (Theme Groups imply the Core Focus or Area of Activity of the particular Group, and also of each member Organization within such a Group).
These Theme Groups can be titled such:
Air
Water
Land
Wildlife
Animal Rights
Communities
Climate Change
Conservation
Environmental Impact Assessment
Environmental Education
Sustainable Development
Waste Management and Recycling
Mining
Environmental Research
Environmental Justice

NEON Structure

NEON’s functions operate on a non-hierarchical, democratic linear manner. The structure of NEON is simple. All the NGOs, Groups and Environmental Activists of NEON elect a Core Advisory. This Core Advisory, along with the Network Manager and Network Coordinator facilitate the everyday activities. The structure within NEON is such that any member can interact for specific or general issues with other members. This cross-learning and interaction happens within each Theme Group, as well as across Groups.

NEON is therefore a membership based platform where the activities and interaction takes place with the consensus of everyone.

Activities

Some of the activities that the NEON Network envisages are:

Mentor Protégé Network: where larger and more experienced Environmental Groups mentor a younger Group.

Cross-Internship Program: where employees of Environmental Organizations can intern at other organizations to carry forward their learnings.

Network: a broad and exhaustive database of all NGOs, Informal Groups and Protest Forums on the Environment within India.

Zonal and National Workshops: to keep all members updated with the latest information and innovations in Environmental Conservation.

Train-the-Trainer Workshops: where Facilitators and Trainers of various Environmental groups will be trained to use newer media of facilitation and advocacy.
